Control is an Illusion

Submission for the GMTK Game Jam 2020

Jam theme: "Out of Control"

Controls:

  • Move: W A S D
  • Look: Mouse
  • Jump: Space
  • Interact: Left Mouse Button
  • Close game: Esc

TIP: Hold space to keep jumping. This will make you move much faster so you can reach buttons in time, but you have less control of player movement when you do that.

You must configure a number of control panels to prevent the building from blowing up. It's simple enough, each of them just needs one of 3 correct coloured buttons to be pressed. The pattern is even shown to you! The only problem is, it isn't just you in control. When your adversary takes over, you black out and it's up to you to figure out what the other entity just did and fix it before it takes over again.

All the models and visuals and stuff are made by me. I've also made all of the two sounds in the entire game in Bosca Ceoil. This is the first game I finished and first jam I tried so I'm still learning :p

I liked the idea and the aesthetics. However, I think you should be more careful with random events that feel unfair, even if it is in line with the jam's theme. Overall great game!

Thanks for trying! Honestly coming up with the concept I knew it could end up being either fun or frustrating for people depending on how well it's balanced. It ended up being fun and challenging for me but it's always hard to judge new player experience as a dev when I am already familiar with how to complete each level :)

No exit button, more playtesting should be done, I couldn't get past the third level (too frequent CONTROL IS AN ILLUSION randomizations), but then again maybe I'm not supposed to. Good game anyway!

It gets more difficult with the later levels but I was able to consistently beat all of them so it just takes some practise. I'll add an exit button with the last build though. Thanks for the feedback!

I'd suggest making it slightly easier to play, because this way it'll be more fun for all of the players, and I don't think spending more than 20-30 minutes in a game like this one is reasonable or should be expected of anyone (unless you add extra features or decorations/small details that make the game feel rich). Thanks for the response though, and great to hear you're listening to feedback and continuing to improve this title!
